Take Two - An Update

So, we'll give this another go, if you guys are on board. New year, new start, right?

I'll stick with that note. Does anyone else agree that the fall seems like a better time for a new start than the middle of the winter does? I think it has a lot to do with when the typical school year starts - we're geared up for new things in September. New pencils, new people, new start.

I don't find January as motivating. It's dark. It's cold. January 2nd has never seemed so too different from December 28th to me.

Anyone disagree? Maybe people in different parts of the US/the world feel differently. I'd be interested to hear.

But as far as me, here's what's up: I'm a senior in college. (What the what? When did that happen?) I'm loving most of my classes. I'm volunteering on an archaeology site off and on the month, hopefully camping next weekend, working on a senior capstone piece of fiction on Neolithic Europe (more to come on that, I'm sure), and really enjoying the house I have with three friends this year. I really miss my 20-year-old brother. He's in Tanzania for the semester being awesome and backpacking and playing patty cakes with Kiswahili-speaking seven year olds. My 17-year-old brother is angsting slightly about being a high school junior and I feel bad for him. I want him to come out here and visit but I'm not sure Mom'll let him drive that far.

And, in the world of writing, I'm working with my WiP. It's 74000 words of YA memoir. More to come on that later.

So, how about you guys? What have you been up to?

  1. I think in the northern hemisphere, September is indeed a better starting time in a lot of ways--tied to the school cycle, yes, but even before that--agriculturally, it is a wind up and finishing, and so time to turn to other things, fresh.

I wanna hear about this archeology project! Sounds like a great one! And the capstone project sounds like a great combo of all your interests... and of course the WiP... but I'm an insider there...

  2. I totally agree! The time of new pencils and new shoes feels so much more like a beginning than the time of old, dirty snow. (But then, I grew up in Maine, where snow gets very old and dirty.)

But even in Coastal California, where I live now, autumn feels like a beginning. It's when we first see the sun after three months of fog. My favorite time of year.

  3. Tami - I agree, it goes back a long time. I actually think seasons have a lot to do with temperament (pun? haha, ugh). There is just something essentially different about life along the equator. The capstone does encompass a lot, haha, but somehow I never appreciated until I tried doing it just how much research goes into resurrecting a world like that. Maybe I can blog about that... And, haha, yes, you are a bit of an insider.

Anne - Dirty snow depresses me. Crisp and new is all good, but coated with road grim and salt... yuk. Sun after gray is always good, we get a lot of gray here, too. So much so that the Cullens actually consider college here. Boo. For several reasons, haha.

  4. I never thought about it before, but I agree, fall seems like a much better time to start the year than January. I suppose they picked January because there's nothing going then and they had to fill some dead space.

  5. Bridgeeyyyy!!
I don't know why I felt the need to call you that.
Anyways, I'm glad you're blogging again!
And I also think Autumn is a better time to start new things, though for me that's because Autumn is always so inspiring. The weather, the changing leaves, there's something about this season that I just love.
I'm super impressed you've gotten so far on your WiP. Yayness.

  6. Margo - Hah, that's kind of what I think about January, too - we needed something to think about. Seriously, though, it's to do with the winter solstice, right? I think. *shrug*

Kas - Haha, my friends out here in the real world all me that, actually, made me smile. I'm glad to be back, and I'm really going to try to stick with it now, I think it'll be easier being back at school and everything. And, thanks!

  7. I completely agree with you on the January/December thing. January never feels like a fresh start, it's even colder than December and dark and gloomy and it's only when I get to the end of the month that I cheer up and feel New!

Comments make my day! Well, not necessarily, stroopwafels and Bruce Springsteen on the radio are key ingredients to making my day, but comments help, too.
